The H330 was an option but due to cables, that become a non-starter. I wanted to keep the 2950 drive backplane. The backplane connectors are SAS SFF-8484; the connectors on the H330 are mini-SAS HD SFF-8644.

They have a wealth of knowledge and consulting their mailing list / forum archives is a good place to start. Search for FreeNAS and the name of your controller. They'll tell you. It depends: H200/300 and PERC9 (ie: 330, 730, 830) cards have the capability to work in pass-through mode, meaning that the disks can be directly presented to the operating system. To do that, you simply need to use unconfigured disks (ie: with no RAID metadata) and to avoid configuring any RAID array (VDISK in DELL terminology)
